Subway: Our Chicken Is Real

Subway is crying ‘fowl’ and wants its customers to know that it’s not serving fake chicken. The restaurant chain is trying to defend itself against a report that indicated the chicken it serves is less than 43% actual chicken.

The Canadian Broadcast Corporation published results of a lab study last week about the chicken sandwiches from six national chains. The question? How much chicken is actually in there? Here were the results:

  1. A&W’s Chicken Grill Deluxe – 89.4%

  2. McDonald’s Country Chicken-Grilled was – 84.9% chicken

  3. Tim Horton’s Chipotle Chicken Grilled Wrap – 86.5%

  4. Wendy’s Grilled Chicken Sandwich – 88.5%

  5. As for Subway, their Oven Roasted Chicken Sandwich clocked 53.6% chicken – while the Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki only had 42.8% chicken

What’s the rest? Generally speaking, it was soy – though there were other substances, including honey and spices…but it’s worth noting that as many as 16 ‘ingredients’ went into what was identified as chicken. Either way, Subway has taken its case to Consumer Affairs. “The accusations made by CBC Marketplace about the content of our chicken are absolutely false and misleading,” they offer in an email to the organization. “Our chicken is 100% white meat with seasonings, marinated and delivered to our stores as a finished, cooked product…This report is wrong and it must be corrected.”
