It’s the beginning of another week and for many, that means stress! Or does it? For some people, stress isn’t such a big deal. So what’s the secret to not letting stress run and ruin your life? Dr. Melanie Greenberg says it’s all about the way we respond to the main stressors in our lives.
“Worry will drag you down, but it engages your attention. So it’s very hard to let go of,” she explains. “What you learn in childhood is another factor… it can change the wiring of your brain and make you less able to deal with stress.”
So what’s the secret to managing stress? Outlook, of course. Greenberg says there are two subgroups of people who are stress-resistant. The first is the group who just deflects and doesn’t deal with problems. The next is the group of people who say, “I can do this even though it’s hard.”
In other words, it makes sense to approach your stress with the attitude that you can manage it, and even squash it. Greenberg suggests meditation, and also thinking critically about what you can and cannot control. Think about it – if it’s out of your control – just let it go!
