Beware of What You Post on Social Media!

No good deed goes unpunished, but at least there’s a happy ending to this story.

A student at Washington State University wanted to do something charitable for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, so she tweeted out a challenge to her followers.

19-year Danni Messina promised to donate 50 cents for every re-tweet and 25 cents for every like. She was prepared to donate as much as $1000, but she never expected her challenge to go viral, which it did — big time.

Her post was retweeted nearly 200,000 times and “liked” more than 400,000 times, which left her on the hook for $210,000.

Since the total is a bit out of her budget, she decided to donate the $1000 and then start a GoFundMe campaign to try and raise the rest. So far, she’s collected more than $58,000.

Messina says, “I am still in shock. I think it’s so incredible that people are donating because they saw my tweet. I love the awareness part of it, and it’s been awesome talking to St. Jude more.”
